Overcoming
"Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world." (1 John 4:4). I am so thankful that God not only changed our destiny when we trusted His Son as our Savior - from Hell to Heaven - but made a perfect provision for every believer to live a successful Christian life.
In eternity past, God knew all about us, and could foresee the problems we would be facing, so He gave us His Word to give us His wisdom and to guide us each step of the way. He realized that we could not, in our own strength, be a match for the devil, but we need not fear our enemy when we rely on Him.
In Ephesians 6:10-18, God starts us with the admonition to "Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might." We have no strength apart from our Lord Jesus Christ! Many a man or woman, relying on their own ability to live the Christian life, has failed because they did not realize this truth. Complete dependence on God alone and giving priority to Bible doctrine is the only answer!
We need to be informed about Satan so God warns us that we will not be in a contest with human beings "...but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." (Ephesians 6:12). He is known as the great deceiver. He deceived Eve and has been deceiving men and women since then. He accuses believers before God’s throne (Revelation 12:7-11). He is called the murderer and liar (John 8:44), but he is limited. Only God is all-knowing, all powerful, and everywhere present.
We are told 366 times throughout the Bible, "Fear not." We are not to be fearful of the devil and his wiles. God has provided us with His armor, and He has already won the battle. Our Lord Jesus told us, "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:32).
We are to stand well informed about God’s truth. The risen Christ revealed from Heaven the Grace Message which alone is able to establish us and enable us to live the Christian life. When we are cognizant of the perfect provision that God has made for every believer, we are not deceived by the cunning devices of the devil.
Only the Gospel can save sinners and bring them into a peace relationship with God. We can know His peace when we trust the Lord Jesus Christ alone as our Savior.
Our first priority should be the shield of faith. We can quench all the fiery darts of the wicked with this shield. When we believe what God has spoken instead of allowing the devil to influence us, the fiery darts of doubting God’s Word will be extinguished. When we are prone to be anxious, and the Holy Spirit reminds us, "Be anxious for nothing," we can choose to say with our Lord Jesus Christ, "It is written," and the devil will flee from us (James 4:7).
To sum it all up, be well informed about the devil and his wiles but don’t focus on him or fear him. Focus on the Lord Jesus Christ, be cognizant of the perfect provision that He has made for all believers. The devil, from the beginning, has deceived men and women, including believers, by getting them to doubt God’s Word. He is out to destroy our testimony! When we are depressed, anxious, and fearful, the unsaved are not interested in our Lord and Savior or apt to give us a hearing. No matter what problem we are experiencing right now, or will be facing tomorrow, God has made a provision for us in His Word, and will see us through it. We, as believers, can say, "We are more than conquerors through Him that loved us." (Romans 8:37).
